Normal Life. Dzianis Skvartsou’s “BBS” at Pavilion of the Republic of Belarus at the 54th Venice Biennale (2011)

Text: Ekaterina Kenigsberg.

There is a tense, strange turn of frames. Bright militarized animation from the very title, from start of music creates the atmosphere of bravery; the rays of searchlights cut the darkness, airplanes fly, uncertain solders rest under an awning. At blue snowy twilight in front of urban landscape similar with Minsk suburb any guarded military vehicles carry something round with a mysterious name "BB".

The sculptor’s studio. The plot is trivial: a young cynical journalist girl, confusing words and hardly formulating a question interviews an artist. The artist, as expected, is sloppy and a little drunk. His friends are of the same kind. The work of sculptor is discussed ("Well, look, honey, the head is taken off and it looks absolutely different"), it is dramatically interrupted with military frames. These frames are turned with ones of a new love affair; the lovers suddenly appeared to be in another time and performing any mission. There is constant flashbacks of another reality with the same characters. Peace and war turn one by one. The "Blizzard" system is superimposed on the roadmap of the GDR; deserters have stolen some important components and now are moving to north-east. The heroes are going through a long way of development from an embryo to a fairly complex metabolic homeostat.

The absurd constituent of the film is so large that evokes rapture involuntarily. Dzianis Skvartsou as a magician balances with three solutions at the same time: animated image and two non-intersecting times created by motion pictures. The comprehension stage of reality in the film is absent, the lines of the plot do not comply with strict mathematical laws. Every plot is developing regardless of another. Tension, movement, expression, surrealism of one event is changed by triviality, platitude and absolute reality of another. It is a creative first-class hooliganism deliberately limited by the frames of plot, a short film as an instrument to research unknown spaces and universes.

  • How is there?
  • It is OK.
